Giants Land Third Overall Draft Pick

Sanders, Hunter, or Ward🤔 Knicks back on track😔 Schoen and Daboll staying🏈

Finally the pain from this grueling, nearly historically worst season of all time for the Giants has finally come to an end. With coaching and GM duo Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen returning for another season, it is time to look towards the offseason and begin rebuilding. Despite finishing tied for the worst record in football, the Giants have landed the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft due to strength of schedule tiebreakers. Three prospects have emerged as leading favorites to don big blue in 2025, and while the Giants at pick number three will likely not get to choose which, at least one will likely be New York bound.

University of Miami QB Cam Ward

First option is Miami QB Cam Ward. After taking his talents from Washington State to South Beach for his senior season he has emerged as a top talent, nearly bringing his team to the College Football Playoffs. In one season, he transformed this Hurricanes offense into one of the best in the country. He is the type of quarterback that has the potential to elevate on offense on his own, a trait that the Giants have lacked at the position since Eli. Ward’s strengths lie in his superb arm talent. He is a natural and easy thrower of the football while maintaining accuracy and control. He is a great improviser while also skilled at pre-snap checks and commanding the offense. At Miami they took shots deep with Ward a lot. Most of the time he makes great, explosive plays, however, he has a tendency to play hero ball which can get him into trouble. As a pro, he will need to work on protecting the football and limiting turnover-worthy plays by taking what the defense gives him rather than always going to a pre-determined read.

University of Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders

Now we have Shedeur Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes. Social media phenomenon and son of NFL legend turned coach Deion Sanders. The Giants are rumored to be very high on Sanders, supposedly having a day 2 grade on him last year if he committed last year. Of the two quarterbacks, Sanders has the superior athleticism. His ability to move around in the pocket and extend plays using his legs is his most valuable asset. He is a gamer and has done well in tight, late game scenarios. He is an accurate passer and is accustomed to throwing from muddy pockets, something the Giants certainly have trouble with. He is a high-floor prospect with a good enough ceiling to buy into. While many think that he is overhyped due to his name and media fame, he will likely be a solid player in the NFL.

Now for the most interesting scenario. Travis Hunter is one of the most talented players we have ever seen in college football. To play both ways for the entire game is something that was thought to be eliminated from the modern game. The Heisman Trophy winner is a high-IQ player who is always aware of the situation and where he is on the field. He is an all around amazing athlete and could potentially fill holes for the Giants in their secondary on defense and elevate their receiving core to an elite level next to Malik Nabers. Any team would be glad to land him in the draft as his impact would be immediate. Yet, for the Giants, there is one large caveat: He does not play quarterback (although he probably could). If the Giants were to land Hunter in the draft, QB Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss would be a top target in the second round. Personally, this is my favorite scenario. Travis Hunter is by far the most talented player in this draft with this QB class one of the most unimpressive in years. By taking Hunter and Dart you can field some young talent, see if you have success, and if not you can enter into the Arch Manning sweepstakes for next year.

Penn State Edge Abdul Carter

Now there are definitely other options for the Giants. Edge rusher Abdul Carter out of Penn State is on the top of many big boards. He is an explosive speed rusher with a quick get-off and the lower body flexibility to bend inside at the top of his rush. His play in the college football playoff showed similarities to Penn State alum Micah Parsons. Another option is Michigan CB Will Johnson. He is a lockdown corner who excels at reading receivers and has excellent body control and fluidity for a tall corner. He could be the lockdown piece the Giants need to finally shut down explosive plays. He is likely the better pure corner than Travis Hunter if the Giants decide to go purely defense.

While the Giants flubbed their chance to land the number one pick, they are still in great position to start/continue this much needed rebuild. By avoiding coaching hiring drama, hopefully the front office has a clear plan of how they can fix the Giants. No matter who they pick this year, they are going to have to be a leader for this crumbling Giants organization.

— Top 5 stories this week —

1. Knicks Blow out the Bucks at Home

Back on track

Knicks got back on track after losing 4 out of the last five games. It goes to show how confusing this Knicks team is. They can blow out a contender in the Bucks, but get destroyed by the Thunder twice who the Bucks have beat this season. Goes to show how the field at the top is fairly even this year with many of the top teams not established, year over year contenders (except the Celtics of course). The Knicks are currently 3 games behind the 2 seed and will need to string together some wins in this fairly easy upcoming stretch of games to close the gap.

2. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen Keep Their Jobs

Please just don’t be bad

John Mara has announced that both Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen will be back for the 2025 season. Given the circumstances, I believe this is the right move. The Giants have had a carousel of coaches fired after their first two seasons ever since Coughlin left and its time to end that trend. We know that Daboll knows how to win games, especially close games, given the 2022 season. It is time to give him a young QB for him to develop. That is why he was brought in in the first place yet I believe Daniel Jones was already a lost cause on this team. The upcoming draft will say a lot about how this regime will try to fix the Gmen.

3. Capobianco Brothers Banned from all MLB Stadiums

In this house these men are heroes, end of story!

The Yankee fans who famously ripped the ball out of Mookie Betts glove during the 2024 World Series have now been banned from all MLB stadiums. This is sports at its worst. This is a perversion of the great American game we know and love. These two brave men should be applauded for being the spark that lit the Yankees fire, bringing them their only win of the series. In all seriousness, this is an incredibly soft move by the league. Fan interreference has always been around and will continue. Mookie was never at risk of injury and it was a harmless act. People forget sometimes that sports are meant to be fun and entertaining.

4. Are the Knicks Frauds???

So close yet so far

While the Knicks, at least record wise, are a top-3 team in the East and a and top-5 overall, they have not been able to take down the top championship contenders. After getting blown out by the Thunder most recently, they are 0-5 against the top-2 teams in each conference. While this is not great, this is the first year of a completely new core. All of these teams beating the Knicks have had the same strong roster for multiple seasons. This goes to show that despite quick success, the Knicks likely need more time to turn into true title contenders.

5. Rangers Take Down Devils in OT

aura.

The Rangers got their first win of the season over their Devils rival in a 3-2 overtime victory at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night. The Rangers have started 2025 fairly well with players like Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck making resurgences, going 6-1-1 since January 1st. They are now finally back over .500 and 6th in the Metro. It is now time to decide whether the Rangers should be buyers or sellers at the March 7th trade deadline. While there is a world where the Blueshirts can claim that third spot in the division, but they need to decide if they're gearing up for a push or selling off assets. They are only 5 points back from the Blue Jackets for the final wild card spot, so playoffs aren’t so farfetched despite this very turbulent, down season.

NEW YORK JOCK EXCHANGE 📈📉

RISERS: Jalen Brunson has been holding up the All-Star Captain standard we have been holding him too. His night over night high scoring games have kept the Knicks winning with KAT sidelined. Vincent Trocheck has been a standout for this Rangers team and is a candidate for next Blueshirts captain. Josh Hart has been a hustle machine. He has recorded multiple triple doubles recently and has shown how he is the best role player in the league. Will Borgen has been a solid addition to the Rangers defense from the Kappo Kakko trade. Mika Zibanejad has finally found his rhythm in the new year, stringing together a 5 game point streak in Ju

LOSERS: Jericho Sims is a bust. He has not lived up to the potential that his extreme athleticism gives him and will likely be traded. Pete Alonso seems to be fed up with the Mets and is most likely leaving Queens. Marcus Stroman is on the trade block for the Yankees as they try to shed salary. Mitchell Robinson has been rumored to be a potential trade asset if the Knicks are not confident in his return. Aaron Rodgers is likely gone from the Jets and will leave the team somehow in a worse place than how he found it 2 years ago.
